![]() ![]() This guide refers to the 2009 Random House edition of The Life You Can Save. A free audiobook, featuring celebrity narration from Kristen Bell, Paul Simon, Stephen Fry, and others, is available here. Singer’s associated charity, also called The Life You Can Save, issued an updated 10th anniversary edition of the book in 2019. Though Singer has published books and articles on fields as diverse as animal welfare, practical ethics, and bioethics, The Life You Can Save has arguably had the widest impact and is one of the achievements for which Singer is best known. In 1972, he produced a seminal essay in the field, “Famine, Affluence, and Morality.” After a much more recent publication in the New York Times (for which Singer received significant positive feedback), he decided to write The Life You Can Save, the culmination of a life’s work on this particular issue. By this time in his career, Singer had spent several decades on ethical questions related to global poverty. In 2009, Peter Singer, philosopher and ethicist at Princeton University, published The Life You Can Save, a short treatise on the obligations of affluent persons to alleviate the suffering of those experiencing extreme poverty on a global scale. ![]()

![]() ![]() The story of Hades and Persephone is without a doubt my favourite Greek myth so I went in to this book with high expectations… and A Touch of Darkness absolutely delivered! This was such a wonderful and creative interpretation and retelling of the classic myth and I loved every moment. As she struggles to sow the seeds of her freedom, love for the God of the Dead grows-and it’s forbidden. The bet does more than expose Persephone’s failure as a Goddess, however. Hades, God of the Dead, has built a gambling empire in the mortal world and his favorite bets are rumored to be impossible.Īfter a chance encounter with Hades, Persephone finds herself in a contract with the God of the Dead and the terms are impossible: Persephone must create life in the Underworld or lose her freedom forever. After moving to New Athens, she hopes to lead an unassuming life disguised as a mortal journalist. ![]() The truth is, since she was a little girl, flowers have shriveled at her touch. Persephone is the Goddess of Spring by title only. ![]() ![]() ![]() She figures if she can corrupt a purely innocent soul, she’ll be clean again, instead of being a miserable bitch that everyone hates. You keep thinking they’re going to rebel against her and come raid the mansion Beauty and the Beast style, but they never do and this plot point doesn’t really come to anything.Īunt Barbe is a sour old cow, and one day over dinner she tells Henrietta how in the olden days they thought that having sex with a virgin would cure you of diseases, and Barbe has the brilliant idea that maybe you could apply this same basic principle to a diseased soul. Aunt Barbe owns a fancy mansion and all the peasant folk hate her. ![]() I guess she isn’t yet ready to leave her life of weird, awkward servitude to her amoral aunt Barbe. ![]() It is a trifle on the nose, and I’d like to make some excuse for Rumer Godden like she was only 33 when this book was published, but you know what, Alexander had conquered the whole Mediterranean by the time he was 33, so no pass for Rumer Godden! Henrietta has a boyfriend but inexplicably refuses to marry him because she - I don’t know why, this is never explained. Yes, the lady’s name is Barbe, and she’s very sarcastic to everybody. Gypsy Gypsy is about this girl called Henrietta who lives with her mean aunt Barbe. Okay, I’m going to ruin the whole plot of this book for your sake to save you from reading it yourself and possibly judging Rumer Godden based on this book which you should not, she is actually wonderful. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Of course, it is no more an option to “stay” in any permanent way for Kay and Cyril than it is for any of us. Should We Stay or Should We Go is sometimes funny, often diverting, always driving towards an urgent answer to its question. “You’re the one who had to go on that big Trafalgar demonstration against the poll tax – which would have raised money for social care and a great deal else,” says Kay to her husband, somewhat formally. Snippets of dialogue between Kay (who voted Leave in the referendum) and Cyril (an ardent Remainer) seem more for exposition’s sake than reflective of their intimacy. Unsurprisingly for a book that privileges philosophising over narrative drive, Should We Stay or Should We Go features a lot of arguments which, one senses, Shriver herself would like to be having. ![]() ![]() As long as you’re recording positive ratings with people, you’re all good. ![]() The key element of the story is the “phera-tech”… a system that attaches to the M-Band and “rates” the compatibility between two people (expressed as a percentage score), by reading their pheromones. The story is set in a subtly dystopian near future America, where “M-Bands” and “M-Chips” – the next step in the evolutionary ladder from the Smart Phone – are government mandated, measuring, recording and even controlling the lives of every citizen on Earth. Now imagine that you not only willingly let them do it, but you actually pay them to. Imagine a world where everything you do, every step you take, every heartbeat, every interaction is monitored by government-sanctioned corporations. ![]() ![]() This is a whole new story, just in the same setting. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that this book is far more than merely an additional riff of 'A Little Princess'. I decided to take the book as a fun chance to see what happened to Sara and friends, and as an opportunity to wander nostalgically through the corridors of Miss Minchin's prim and proper school. ![]() ![]() On the other hand, I was sceptical that another writer would be able to match the warm and cosy innocence with which the original is written and I was worried that it would appear as a twee or weak imitation without much substance. On the one hand, I wanted to catch-up with the characters. I am a big fan of the beloved classic 'A Little Princess' by Frances Hodgson Burnett, but when I found out that Holly Webb had written a sequel, I wasn't sure whether to read it. A pleasing read whether or not you enjoyed 'A Little Princess'. The gnarly historical fiction element does not make the story any less charming and cosy than the original, and Webb has successfully written in an uncannily similar style to Frances Hodgson Burnett. ![]() ![]() This is a whole new story, just in the same setting, with the added dimension of a well-handled exploration of women's rights in the early 20th century. Summary: This book is far more than merely an additional riff of 'A Little Princess'. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So in Nebraska, there was one crucial vote - Senator Merv Riepe. Both of them failed in kind of dramatic fashion. SIMMONS-DUFFIN: So the South Carolina bill was a ban at conception, and the Nebraska bill was a six-week ban. MCCAMMON: Let's start with the abortion ban failures in Nebraska and South Carolina. SELENA SIMMONS-DUFFIN, BYLINE: Hi, Sarah. To help us understand these developments, we've called on NPR health policy correspondent Selena Simmons-Duffin. And also this week, a study out of Oklahoma, a state with a number of abortion bans, sheds light on the real effects of these laws for many women seeking medical treatment. This week, abortion bans in two deeply conservative states, South Carolina and Nebraska, failed to advance in their respective legislatures, raising serious questions about the political viability of these types of laws for Republicans. We begin tonight's program by taking stock of recent developments around abortion access. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() London, 1925: In a world of townhomes and tennis matches, socialites and shooting parties, Miss Nan O'Dea became Archie Christie's mistress, luring him away from his devoted and well-known wife, Agatha Christie. In retrospect, it's frightening, but I daresay in the moment it feels sweet. It takes over your body so completely, it's like a divine force, grabbing hold of your will, your limbs, your psyche. It's a particular feeling, the urge to murder. "A long time ago, in another country, I nearly killed a woman.
